Kihei Kotone, Unovan name, Lyra, was born in New Bark Town, Johto, and descends from a long line of samurai from the Edo era. Her father left when she was six years old, right after he descended into a mid-life crisis and became a abusive drunk, and he stomped out after leaving her mother nearly comatose. Kotone learned of this upon returning from nursery school.
Her mother recovered, but was never the same. Then on, she was a broken woman; she remained gentle, but the heartbreak pushed her into seclusion and sapped any motivation to live, let alone work. The only reason she held on was her only child.
Without a household income, welfare meant an extremely frugal life. Kotone stepped up as much as she could, doing odd jobs around the town to earn as much as possible, but a child can never make an income anyone can call livable. She had support from her childhood friend Hibiki, and his family was kind enough to make sure she was at least well-fed.
Growing up, Kotone always read the scrolls preserved in her family home. Whether push came to shove, she never sold them for money, instead drawing inspiration from the samurai who came before her, their teachings, their thoughts, and their philosophies. This, combined with her relationship with Mr. Tanaka, a retired instructor from Saffron's fighting dojo (who she affectionately refers to as Tana-jiji) taking the time to foster her passion for martial and military arts, she grew up into a fierce woman with a warlike mindset. Perhaps old-fashioned in some ways, but deeply principled, with an overwhelming sense of justice. On his grave, when he eventually passed, she swore to honour his tombstone with accolades of greatness.
With finances running dry, she eventually answered to Professor Elm's open call for an assistant to transport a Mystery Egg from Mr. Pokémon's House north of Cherrygrove—and upon making the journey with the Chikorita Professor Elm gave her for protection, she met Professor Oak. That is where Kotone's pokémon journey truly began, with him entrusting to her his own model of the Pokédex, an item she treasures deeply as the symbol of trust her new benefactor places in her. In return for her undertaking the Pokédex, the Professor saw to financially taking care of her mother.
Kotone's main team is the one registered within the Indigo Plateau's Hall of Fame. Her pokémon are those she considers peers, equals, and most importantly, friends. In their names, she honours great warriors of the past.
Apart from these six, she has a variety of pokémon captured as part of Professor Oak's Pokédex Project. After Pallet Town Trainers Red and Green filled out the original 151 slots, there was a huge migratory boom in the combined landmass of Kanto and Johto. With mysterious radio signals in the Ruins of Alph acting as the heralding trigger, mass migration ensued from distant lands such as Hoenn and Sinnoh. Kotone has documented over 400 different species, and the individual specimens she caught for the Oak Laboratory's research number even greater.
